GUJ condoles death of veteran journalist Sanjeev Verenkar

The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) condoles the passing away of veteran journalist, poet/author and GUJ member Sanjeev Verenkar.

Verenkar breathed his last on Friday while undergoing treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

He was 64 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Verenkar, a prolific author, sensitive poet, and responsible journalist, was born on August 29, 1959, at Savoi-Verem, Ponda.

Verenkar started his career in journalism with Sunaparant in 1987. He later joined Navaprabha and retired from the same publication.

Verenkar won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi award for his collection of Konkani poems ‘Raktachandan’ in 2021.

He was earlier awarded the Vimala Pai Puraskar for ‘Aswasth Surya’-Vishwa Konkani Kavita Kruti Puraskar, Dr T.M.A Pai Foundation Award for ‘Sanj Sulus’, All India Radio Puraskar for ‘Vastu Purushacho Asth Zatana’ and Konkani Bhasha Mandal Puraskar for ‘Bhavjumbar’ and ‘Mumbar’.

Verenkar’s ‘Prerana-Rukh’ (inspirational tree) contains 21 biographical essays in Konkani illustrating the contributions of important 20th-century personalities of the Gomantak Maratha Samaj (GMS).

The Goa Union of Journalists conveys its deepest sympathies to the Verenkar family.
